The Szubota Legacy:
Four Generations of European Craftsmanship
Late 1800s • Budapest
The story of the Szubota family begins in Budapest, Hungary in the late 1800s, when Istvàn Szubota established a tradition of fine decorative painting, custom finishes, and master gold leaf craftsmanship. The same Old World craftsmanship seen in landmarks such as Budapest's magnificent St. Stephen's Basilica—with its gilded dome, ornate detailing, and masterful decorative finishes—inspired generations of Szubota artisans.
In an era when every detail was created by hand, the family became known for its dedication to quality, artistry, and the preservation of Old World techniques.
A Reputation for Excellence
The legacy continued with his son, Istvàn Ferenc Szubota, who inherited not only the family trade but also a deep respect for craftsmanship. Under his guidance, the family expanded its expertise in decorative painting, gilding, restoration, and architectural finishes, as well as becoming a renowned gold leaf finisher of his time, building a reputation for excellence that was passed from one generation to the next.
1956 • A Journey to Freedom
The family's history took a dramatic turn during the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. Following the Soviet suppression of the uprising, approximately 200,000 Hungarians fled their homeland seeking freedom and opportunity abroad. Many eventually resettled in the United States.
Among those seeking a new beginning was the Szubota family. Leaving behind their homeland but carrying with them generations of artistic knowledge and craftsmanship, they immigrated to the United States, where they rebuilt their lives and continued the family tradition.
United States • Third Generation
The third generation, Istvàn Steven Szubota (Erick's father), grew up preserving the techniques, values, and work ethic that had defined the family for decades. Combining European craftsmanship with American opportunity, he continued the tradition of custom painting, decorative finishes, restoration, and gold leaf artistry, ensuring that the family's heritage would endure.
Present Day • Fourth Generation
Today, Erick Szubota proudly represents the fourth generation of this remarkable legacy. Drawing from more than a century of family knowledge, Erick blends traditional European techniques with modern design and finishing methods. His work reflects the same commitment to precision, creativity, and excellence that began with his ancestors in Hungary over 100 years ago.
From the workshops of Hungary to the opportunities found in America, the Szubota story is one of perseverance, craftsmanship, and family. Through war, revolution, immigration, and change, four generations have preserved the art of custom painting and gold leaf work—proving that true craftsmanship is timeless and that a family's legacy can cross oceans, generations, and centuries.
